I’d like to point out what I’ve learned from coming to terms with my own privilege as a white-cis-gender male over the past few years: many of us literally do not understand how our liberation is rooted in the oppression of others. For me this has taken multiple years of exposure at gatherings and through pieces of writing like yours. And I certainly have a lot of work to do.

Racial and cultural ignorance is embedded within our culture. For many of us, it takes years to shed this skin, and we are typically wearing it without even realizing how terrible it looks and feels to other people.

This is not a defense of white racism and homophobia. Such behavior should be rightfully called out when it happens. It is, rather, an open invitation to everyone striving towards cultural and social solidarity to realize that many of us need repeated education, over time, to understand what it is that we’ve been doing wrong. So please keep writing, and keep in mind that most of us want to be better humans, but we need a helping hand in the process.
